I’d rather watch people play Halo than watch Netball. That’s more of a sport than Netball is.

Well said! Netball needs to be taken seriously, like football or cricket and other predominantly male sports. Perhaps some of netball’s governing bodies should get together and come up with a strategy on how to raise the game’s profile.

netball should be aired just as football or cricket so then the public will recognised the game as a serious sport and not just a girls thing so we all should communicate and get together to formulate a plan to have netball games aired especially in rhe caribbean. in trinidad and tobago we dont even have any thing in the achives we have nothing on trinidad ne ball for anyone to look at. and last we should come together to have netball included in the olympics. so the world could make netballers as important as the olympians

one thing which would get women’s sport on the front page AND taken seriously is if serious money was involed. it’s interesting that sports companies haven’t worked out that woman make up a little over half the population of world…talk about untapped market potential (involement and sponsorship). thankfully, some companies are starting to wake up eg. San Remo (not a sporting company, but being a mother a also do the shopping and i support those companies which support female sports.

You’re right that fans need to send a message and basically be more vocal about our frustration. I’m planning to write another post about how we can stir things up in the media, e.g. bombarding as many media channels as possible to ask why they don’t cover netball. Also I think as fans we need to leave comments (positive and negative) on any netball articles we come across to show we read the articles which in turn gives feedback to the various media. Change won’t happen overnight but let’s see if we can build up some momentum. All ideas welcome.

If the USA has a netball association, then surely we can get this beautiful game into the Olympics?! After all, BMX biking is now an Olympic sport…? I think, in the end, the viewers need to send a strong message to mainstream media that they want to see more women’s sports. Australia’s ABC is pretty good at providing the coverage, and recently showed all of the Matilda’s games at the women’s Asian Champions League football (soccer), and they also show the lawn bowls quite regularly. However, the ABC’s news coverage leaves a lot to be desired, and I have repeatedly left messages with them about their poor showing. If we all made an effort, not just the sporting bodies, we might just make a difference.

Yes, netball should be an Olympic Sport and netball fans can see no real reason why it isn’t! This will be the topic of another article in the near future. Stumbling block seems to be that it’s mainly Commonwealth countries that play netball and it’s not popular enough worldwide.
